John Bristow is the adopted son of Sir Alec and Lady Yvette Bristow. He hires Cormoran Strike to investigate the death of his adopted sister, the supermodel Lula Landry.

John Bristow became a lawyer, and visited Lula on the day of her death to discuss contracts.

Not convinced that the police investigation into his adopted sister's death was accurate, John went to the offices of his childhood friend Cormoran Strike, who was now working as a private investigator out of an office in Denmark Street. He shared his belief that Lula was murdered, and hired Cormoran to investigate further. He showed Cormoran pictures of a man caught on CCTV outside 18 Kentigern Gardens who had not been traced. John gave Cormoran £1,000 to look into the evidence and decide whether or not the case was worth investigating. He wanted peace of mind for his mother, who was dying of cancer.
